You Can Win by Shiv Khera - Review

Sometimes it is nice to read up a self-help book. At least we feel the weekend is well spent.

Two most important impediments that most organizations face across the globe:
  • We don't have business problem, we have people problem. When we take care of our people problem, most of the the business problem are automatically resolved. 
  • Whenever a person says that I can not do it, it means two things: 
    • I don't know how to do it. That’s knowledge problem. 
    • I don't want to do it. There could be two reasons: 
      • One, I don't care. That's attitude problem. 
      • Two, I feel strong enough not to do it. That's a value issue. 
When people are asked what is that one thing that you think should change in your organization to make it effective. They say attitude.


Think about people in certain similar circumstances, some break record while others break themselves.

Everybody wants to climb the ladder but sometimes people realises that the ladder is leaning to a wrong building. Success is important but without fulfillment, it is empty. That's like good looks without goodness and that will become irritating after sometime. It is a matter of substance over form and not form over substance.

Say, for a salesperson profession, they are trained how to smile and shake hands - which is important! But how long will the smile be sincere unless the person has the desire to serve people? People can see through people and so, will that fake smile not become irritating?

Sometimes, we tell others what-to-do and not why-don’t-you-do? Most people knows what to do because if you asked them they will give you all the right answers. What is missing is motivation. It is impossible to give motivation because it is action. I can't act for you, you have to act for yourself. What you can give is inspiration - that is thinking. When thinking changes it starts reflecting in behavior which is more lasting. And that's what people are looking for, aren’t they?

The way we feel about ourselves is self esteem. When we feel good - the world is nice, productivity goes up and relationships are lot better. The reverse is just as true.

Self esteem is inversely related to ego - those people with ego put others down and every decision they make is more to satisfy their ego than to make sense. Why do a human put down another human? There are people who feel good when the other person feels bad. They feel superior when other person feels inferior. Which mean they don't want to put themselves up but they want to pull others down. Sad but true. 

Another ego is fragile. You say a thing and I take it and get hurt. Both of these egos destroy teamwork. Most of the challenges in families, organisations, societies are majorly self-esteem issues.

Why do people deal with us? Not that we are the smartest people but they are comfortable dealing with us. What gives this comfort? People don't care how much you know rather they want to know how much you care. The X-factor.

Leader are not neutral, they are good or bad. Good leader actively guide and bad leader actively misguide. Good leaders look to create more leaders and bad leader look to create more followers because they are insecure.

Vision is the ability to see the invisible. If we can see the invisible, we can achieve the impossible.

Some people are honest because they don't want to get caught telling lies, they are doing the right thing for the wrong reason. While some people are honest because they believe that’s the right thing to do. They are doing the right thing for the right reason. That's character.

There is a world of difference between reputation and character. Reputation is what other think of us and character is what we know who we are. We practice values because we believe in it.

All of these mean nothing unless you have a system in put into practice. What is most important is that you take away an action plan. Read the book!
